Censorship

After reading the blog about Iran I got to thinking, why exactly do we need censors? First Amendment rights give us a reason to say censorship is bad. I mean if we have all of this freedom, why are we letting a group such as the PMRC (Parents Music Resource Center) edit our music?

  1. because for some reason there are people who feel that unlimited free expression is chaotic and there minds are so closed to be able to understand it. thebn those who really are just hating on the fact that there not able to be as expressive as we are probley because they have a very conforming backgorund or somehthing of the sort or they just never really experienced free epression... im reminded of this spongebob squarepants episode were this old lady tries to ban krabby patties until she taste one and relises why its so much fun .. how do you get tight wads to relize how great it is to have fun and express urself !!

  3. We shouldn't let them censor. We as a country have to choose whether or not to allow complete free speech or take it away and not act like we have it. We cannot just pick and choose what we think should be censored. This will only lead to more loss of our first ammendment rights down the road. Who knows what the PMRC will decide is vulgar 10 years down the road. They are such a small group of people they shouldnt have the right to choose for such a large demographic such as the United States.

  5. This is all good, how ever I was wondering, what about children? I would have loved to be exposed to all these different kinds of music as a child but, I was very sheltered. Not only music but, I missed out on alot of good movies too. Is it okay to change/censor things for children?

  10. How, exactly, did the blog get you thinking about censorship? And how is this question moving like this. There is very little cohesion to our answers.

  11. I began to think deep about how you said that the islamic republic took control. which got me thinking about control in our country and how much control the government has in our lives, even though its not as extreme as it is in Iran.

  12. Az- To play devils advocate, if we don't censor what children listen to or watch they could be exposed to something that could harm them. And i'm think harm like psychological. You wouldn't expose a child to gun fights on television would you? That scene over and over again could cause them to grow up thinking its ok to join a gang. Or that there is no real consequences to their actions.

And when it comes to music, so much music is crap now a days don't get me stated! It seems all people wanna sing or rap about is Money and Sex.

I know their just trying to sell records and singles, But why is that so popular? Isn't the Entertainment Industry in charge of what we should think is "hot"? And when you think about it isn't that a type of Censorship? to put someone else in charge of what we should think or listen to or watch?

I think censorship is a double standard, We shouldn't limit our free speech amendment, but if some stuff isn't censored, what kind of message are we putting out there?

  13. Texas-
to answer this I will say a brief statement,

Parents are getting lazy, they need to monitor what they are exposing to their children better. if you don't want your child exposed to these things, try using the old fashion way, turn it off. Though multi-media is fun, there is more things out there than just TV, music, video games, and movies.

tell them to go play outside

  14. But can you really blame parents? Shouldn't it be the video game makers or directors of tv shows and movies? They control what it is exactly that we watch, right? And if we tell them to go play outside, what if a child molester picks them up? Wouldnt we rather them stay inside and play a nice game? And not have to worry about what it is their being exposed to?
