Blog Question for 7/28
why are you here, in college? because you want the education, or because of the parties? i was sitting at lunch with my friend Lindsey aka Texas and we were discussing a fellow student of ours, who never seems to do their work and has parties and drinking on the mind 24/7. i was putting the blame on him, because he was unresponsible, but then i realized, why does the media portray college life as one big party, with drinks and drugs. one very good example of this would have to be Asher Roth's song "i love college", if you listen to the lyrics, there is nothing to do with the education that the institute offers, but more on the simple fact of sex, drugs and parties. so why is it that college students are willing to spend a good time of there life in debit, and toss the education to the side and focus on what happens after class. so my question for you is this, why are YOU here? are you here because of the education or the parties, etc... be honest, i really want to know what you think.

This is a good question, but let's try not to target anyone in specific. Let's look at the larger culture and its opinions about college--in a way, this is what Stephanie was doing yesterday when she was discussing African representation in the media.
ReplyDeleteAlso, you might want to consider the position Kyle and I are in: If we let you pass Bridge, we are putting a financial burden on you; is that burden worth it? Will you work to make sure you get everything you can out of this opportunity? We are often worried about this and we feel like it does nobody any good to just go to college and spend their time paying back loans.
The people who go to college and are successful are the people who have really asked themselves if they are ready, if they are passionate about what they do, and if they are willing to do ALL the extra work (like auditioning, submitting work, networking, and asking for even more work).
Especially as artists, we need to know that we love what we do and can do it even at our most burnt out.
I never even really go to parties or have time for them, since i do have a job, and since i now have homework everyday. I've come to this school for a education, but also to have fun, experience things, and meet new people, i mean there's always time for fun and parties, but, i take my education more seriously than parties and drinking and being out till 4am.. which i have done on a school night before, and yes i do regret it cause i had to wake up 2 hours later. so honestly, i come to school to learn new things, education wise, and fun wise. if that makes sense at all.
ReplyDeletewell im really hear for like a whole diffrent experience besides the partying thart lecture yesterday really hit home with me in the fact that students were spending there spring breakin trinadad shooting a movie .. thats the experience that i want to be a part of i want to have fun true but i fucked around in high school and i plan to walk away from college with all of the knowledge that im expectted to have. i dont understand why people dont take copllege adss seriously as i see it isnt evreybody trying to be successful? and if not why would you come to a expensive as school why not just go toi a cityt college or southern illinois or some other party school ?
ReplyDeleteI think alot of people do go to college to party. You have this brand new sense of freedom and it takes alittle while to learn how to control yourself and be responsible. I experienced this at the college i attended previously to Columbia. I spent most of my time partying and learned that is definately not what I want to focus on in college. The way I see it is I can either bust my ass for 4 years to get a degree or I can party for 4 years and not have shit to show for the time I spent in school.
ReplyDeleteI'm here for the entire college experience. Not just for the partying but also for the more challenging yet rewarding work. But also a major part of me going to college was to get out of my parents house for a while because they drive me fuckin' nuts. I think we all have alterior motives for coming to college other than education even though education might be your main concern.
ReplyDeletei think the media focus on the party part of college cuz the media only tells storys that ppl are going to wanna read or watch and even tho college is more then just a good party and drinking the truth of the matter is that no one wants to read about college kids doing home work or how much work they do no one wants to read about that i know i dont lol. like when that lady was picking out them movie and she was saying they dont show the bright side Africa well the truth is the media dont want to see that side of africa cuz i know i wont go to no movie to see a move about a african kid going to college and its all work work work would yalll??????
ReplyDeletei want to make something with my life and i dont want to be like the rest of my family and wor at a job that they hate.so im in college to learn and someday get a job i olove, make new friends and start my own life.
ReplyDeleteWell, i kinda think its both ways. Like i got accepted to other colleges that would have been less expenxive as Columbia but the reason i chose Columbia is because i knew not only wold i get a good education, but there is always something going on in Chicago! So when and if i have free time i know i wont be bored!
ReplyDeleteBut i do think the mdia potrays College as nothing but a social scene. With movies like Superbad and songs like mike mentioned. So kids come to college wanting THAT experience. Thinking thats what is going to happen and not expecting the work that comes along with the play. Thats why sooo many freshman and sophties fail out. All they're in college for is to party.
But is the media a good excuss for us to not take our Education seriously?
no its not we should take are education serious cuz this is away to better are self and to get a job and the career feild we want and to be good at what we do. Media should be last on are mind but thats not always the case
ReplyDeletelook everybody knows that you come to college to learn the song is just enterainment and its true cause every one is going to experience some type of run in with the party life of college its just up to you if you going to participate or not. plus its tons of advertisments that relate to college education like everest and west wood their all over tv. and if you notice at the end of i love college he grab his book bag and still went off to class. you always got to have a social life just got to know how to balance them ad stay on your P's and Q's
ReplyDeleteI don't need to spend thousands of dollars to go to parties. I'm here for the education. I'd like to gain the knowledge that will help me do what I want to do, and hopefully allow me to live comfortably too. Columbia is a great school for networking, but I have my own priorities.
ReplyDeleteomg im like so totally feelin wat u said at first royelle ur right the media really dosent want to see those side and why would a college want to portray itself a s a place of seriouness to a whole buch of kids who just came out of serious high school its being portayed that way because it's more appealing to people
ReplyDeleteIm here because I love to learn more. I am not here for all the partying. It's just a waste of money to go to college and drink away. I want to walk out of here being successful. I want a stable job and be secure to be able to support myself in the futre. All of that can be earned by hard work. Why would you come to school just for the party scence? It such a waste of time and money when you can just not go to school and party out somewhere else. I am very passionate about dance and someday all this work will get paid off by doing all the things I need to do. I want to be able to do something that I love and enjoy.
ReplyDeleteWhat royelle said, i never really even though about that? so you make a really good point there.
ReplyDeletelol yea royelle ROCKS !!
ReplyDeleteJust because someone likes to party and talks about it does not mean that they are not here for the right reasons. Personally i think that i am the person who like's to have fun. Yea i go to parties and drink also talk about it but when it comes down to it i know school is where i want to be. just because i like to have fun, or party outside of school, does not mean that i do not take school serous. like they said no one is making us be here. i choose to stay in till i get my home work in or do it when i get in, then go work out for an hour and a half and if i decide that i would like to go out after all my priorates are finished, it is well deserved. in college it is the time where you have to learn to balance work and fun. i get up, arrive 20 minutes with my work complete. If i showed up 20 minutes late because i over slept and haven't completed my home work i would see the problem. i may party and smoke occasionally but i take on more responsibilities then just school and sometimes like a relief or just a little fun. Is the reason that you are asking this question because you have a hard time balancing the two?
