Urban Dictionary, Should We Use It?

So yeah,
While writing my essay on the place that my character goes to in order to think, I stumbled upon The Urban Dictionary. Should we be allowed to use this list, and many other words in our essays?

Ass Blaster
Shit-Drenched Infant Corpse
Penis
Douser
Shit Tickets
Tit Ball
Titanic Poo
Toilet Abortion
Toilet Poet
Boob Pants
Pee Flaps

Do these words just demean our essay, or will they give our essay just the right consistency of spice needed in order to create the best dish our mind has ever concocted? Please do understand that this blog is ment to provoke thought. This brings us back to our good friend Dash Shock. Though these words may be "offensive" or even "Made-up", does that make them any less than the found in our regular dictionaries? And for that matter, why shouldn't we use them if we're using them in the correct context? Though it kills me to admit this, mom was right, writing is as much as an art from as any kind of dance, painting, or song. But you know, I could very well just be wrong and just making this blog for a few laughs. I don't know. just some food for thought. But I should probably finish this paper. So I'll see you all bright and early.

-Peace

  1. thats like really cool lol i did not kno that those words existed lol

but i think that using profanity in our essay is like so totally justified this iIS A ARTS COLLEGE RIGHT i mean to me profanity is just another way of expression granted some peole take it to far with all the "fucks and shit" we throw around but in the proper context i think all these words would be fine in a essay

  2. I think it really depends on the class. If it is more of a social setting i think that it would be ok to use the words. These words can easily be used to make a paper more entertaining so i think people should just think wisely about using them.

  5. i think you should be able you use that kind of language in your papers, because it is your form of expression, i think the extreme use of that language is a little tacky and too extreme, but some use of it is okay to me. those words listed above our words of our generation, past generations had different vocabulary. like for example, the word "wench". in my generation that word is a word simply exchaned by friends, merely a greeting. in past generations it means whore, or slut. so i think that type of vocabulary is just words of the generation.

  6. i think that we should use it only if you give the readers knowledge that this is an urban dictionary word, like if u put a * by the word so that we know to look it up in urban so that we get the context of the word in ur work

  7. I think if people were allowed to use slang in essay, alot more people would do them. It would make them alot easier so students might be more willing to do them on time. I also think they may be longer and they would definitely be alot more entertaining.

  8. I believe its okay sometimes to use profanity in papers but not too much! But to use urban words in a paper such as ass blaster and shit tickets is pointless and blah. What if the readers don't understand some of the words and the whole paper would be confusing. Personally I wouldn't take a person serious that wrote a paper using the urban dictionary. Seriously what does toliet abortion mean lol?

  9. I dont think that the words shown above should not be mention in dictionary. Funny yeah but these made up words are just nonsense to me. If I was looking up a word in the dictionary..i would look up words that are more meaningfull. I can easily make up words and request for it to be mention in the dictionary. Yes I believe it can be just an expression so it can go either way.

  11. Urban Dictionary is a good source for an essay. The words that you use should be agreed upon by the other people that use the site though. If you're making up your own words to somehow express yourself, that's not really a good idea because other people can't relate to that. Personally, I wouldn't want to use any words that show a lack of maturity...but that's just me.

  12. The English language is way more flexible than most other languages and has, over time, experienced a lot of change. If you heard Old English, you would think it was slang--it's actually very similar to contemporary slang.

You are making, when you are writing, a kind of pact with your reader that you will be clear and speak to them. You are choosing, whatever style you are writing in, to include and exclude some people based on their contexts. For instance, if I wrote this in an academic tongue using "postmodern" language, I would exclude people who--because of economics maybe--were unable to go to college.

So you have to know your audience.

A lot of words don't mean a whole lot and are just filler words. Sometimes, words like profanity, can give "voice" to a writer. Other times, profanity is filler and covers up not knowing an answer or insecurity.

I would suggest deeply considering audience. Will Smith never uses cuss words in his rap because of something his grandmother said.
